Raquel Pennington has been targeted for a title fight against reigning women’s UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Still, it would appear that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) may be planning to scrap the fight in interest of another.
Women’s UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg successfully defended her title over the weekend, earning a first round finish at UFC 222. During the post-fight press conference for the event, UFC President Dana White revisited the idea of Cyborg facing off against Amanda Nunes in a super fight.
“The fight to make is [Cyborg] and [Amanda] Nunes. That’s the fight that needs to happen. Nunes wants the fight. She wants the fight. I want the fight. I’m sure the fans want to see it, too. We’ll get that one going.”
When asked if he will scrap Pennington’s shot at the title to set up the match, White responded:
“I think that I will. Could be. [Cyborg] just fought. Once the adrenaline goes down, she’s got to get checked out, make sure she’s 100-percent.
“I just think that her and Nunes is the fight that needs to happen.”
