It would appear that UFC superstar Conor McGregor has been hankering for a fight with newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for some time now.
UFC President Dana White has gone on to reveal that “Notorious” is allegedly interested in throwing down with the Dagestani native. For fight fans that have grown cautious of the UFC president’s statements, McGregor’s striking coach has come forward to reveal that the former two-division UFC champion has been interested in fighting “The Eagle” for a while now.
Speaking on the The BBC MMA Show, SBG Ireland striking coach Owen Roddy revealed that Conor McGregor has been discussing the possibility of facing Nurmagomedov in Russia ever since “Notorious’s” boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in 2017.
“You know what Conor told me? He said, ‘I want Khabib in Russia.’ Isn’t he (expletive) awesome? He’s like, ‘I want Khabib, in Russia.’ He’s awesome. … He’s working on boxing Floyd Mayweather and then he’s talking about fighting Khabib in Russia right after.”
“Conor’s a mad thing. Conor’s very funny. Conor turns around to me just after the Mayweather fight, and he’s like, ‘There’s talk of me fighting Khabib. I might do it in Russia.’
“And he’s like, ‘You know what we’ll do? We’ll do it like Rocky. We’ll go to Siberia, and we’ll train in the snow, and I’ll get one of those yokes that you put on your shoulders to get the lats.’ I was cry-laughing. But he was serious. I was like, ‘Conor, those are mad things.’ But that’s what we love him for.”
Speaking on the possibility of McGregor returning to the octagon following the fighter’s recent fracas in Brooklyn, New York, Roddy added:
“I would like to think so. I know there’s been a lot of talk now about this Khabib fight. It seems to be brewing towards this one.”
