The UFC lightweight division has been in a bit of a whirlwind as of late. Now it would appear that the UFC was reportedly working on a miniature tournament to simplify things, thought the plan has since reportedly fallen through.
Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson were each stripped of their respective undisputed and interim titles. No. 1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov was crowned the new undisputed champion after defeating a fighter not within the top ten of the division. All in all, it has been a chaotic time for the lightweight class.
Beyond that, UFC superstar Nate Diaz has been showing an interest in making an octagon return following his two fight rivalry with Conor McGregor. Former multi-division champion Georges St-Pierre is even potentially considering a move to the division.
Now MMA Fighting has reported that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) had a plan for a small tournament concerning some of the sport’s most popular fighters.
Georges St-Pierre was being targeted to face Nate Diaz, while Khabib Nurmagomedov would face Conor McGregor. The fights victors would of course face each other.
GSP vs. Diaz was being targeted for Aug. 4, with Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor being planned for the fall. However, the tournament has reportedly been scrapped.
