Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez suffered a tough loss over the weekend. Now the former title holder’s coach Mark Henry has come forward with a statement concerning the fight.
Eddie Alvarez faced off against Dustin Poirier in a highly anticipated rematch within the main event of UFC on FOX 30. The event took place on Saturday, July 28, in Calgary, Canada.
Alvarez landed an illegal 12-to-6 downward elbow on the head of his opponent within the second round. Referee Marc Goddard momentarily halted the fight and stood the two competitors up before continuing the bout.
Dustin Poirier earned a TKO victory shortly after. Since then, a video of Alvarez’s coach Mark Henry mimicking a 12-to-6 downward elbow to the former champion just before the illegal strike was landed is spreading over the internet.
Speaking on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Marc Henry has revealed that he was instructing Eddie Alvarez to throw elbows from the position. Henry confirmed that he of course realizes that 12-to-6 downward elbows are illegal.
However, Henry accidentally relayed his message concerning elbows by mimicking a 12-to-6 downward elbow.
