Alistair Overeem has put on quite the storied career over the years. With that in mind, there is one question that many fight fans are still asking. How did Overeem get his famous facial scar?
Alistiar Overeem is a former K-1 and Strikeforce champion, now competing within the heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Speaking to ESPN, Overeem has since come forward with an explanation for the famous scar across his face.
The UFC heavyweight was quick to explain that he has been fighting since a young age. However, those fights did not always take place inside a ring.
“I was 15 years old and hanging out in bars in my home country of the Netherlands, and I was always getting into fights. And this one guy broke a bottle in my face. I had to have 20 stitches through my cheek. I’ve always been a fighter and always competitive. But I then started to get more disciplined and [learned how to] not be such a rebel. My brother helped me focus to get out of trouble and get me in the right direction.”
Overeem initially wanted to focus his energy by joining the military, but things simply did not work out for the fighter.
“I wanted to join the Army but my eyesight wasn’t good, so I quit school and my job to just focus on fighting. I didn’t want to just get deployed. I wanted to get in on the action.”
Alistair Overeem is now set to face off against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 225. The live pay-per-view event will take place June 9 inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
