Heavy hitters Leon Edwards and Vicente Luque met in the middle of the octagon for their middleweight bout at “UFC Fight Night 107” and brought the crowd to calm state with their slower-paced back-and-forth fight.
The feeling out process lasted about three minutes before Luque tripped Edwards, taking him to the mat in the first round. Luque tried hard to transition to side control but Edwards’ ground defense proved to be efficient when he blocked the transition, forcing Luque to settle with half guard. The fight would remain on the ground for the remainder of the round.
The second saw both fighters try and ride the fence, working long and hard for a takedown to no avail. While both men landed their fair share of shots, it essentially all came down to the final round.
Edwards found his rhythm when Luque’s back was against the fence. Fatigue had obviously begun to settle in, and both fighter’s punches were labored which meant their reaction time to block flurries slowed down as well. Edwards fired off a several punch combination where Luque blocked the majority of the shots, but Edwards snuck a couple in to gain some momentum. As the fight made its way back to the center of the octagon, Edwards saw a bit of a second wind while Luque still struggled to match Edwards’ pace. The attack to Luque’s body started to do its damage and it became obvious Edwards was convinced he won the bout when the final horn sounded.
Leon Edwards def. Vicente Luque by way of Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
